DURHAM: Special Olympics Ontario is pleased to announce that the 24h Mosport Velo Grand Prix Cycle Relay has shifted its dates to Saturday, September 21st and Sunday September 22nd to accommodate more cyclists.

The new fundraiser will also feature a six-hour 360 GP Challenge for riders who would also like to experience the legendary track at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, in Bowmanville. Both events will start at 2 p.m. on September 21st.

“Special Olympics is very pleased to have been designated as the beneficiary of the funds raised from this inaugural event,” said Glenn MacDonell, President and CEO of Special Olympics Ontario. “The 24h Mosport Velo event and the six-hour 360 GP Challenge will bring fun and excitement (and different types of wheels) to the track at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park”

“The date change will allow more individuals to participate in the 24-hour event over the weekend. We are also happy to announce a new category within the event – the ‘360 GP Challenge’. This will accommodate individuals who are unable to participate for the full 24 hours, but still offers the thrill of riding on the champagne pavement at Mosport. Cycling is a growing sport and this opportunity to be able to ride on the legendary track is a truly unique opportunity. I along with many Special Olympics athletes look forward to welcoming all participants to the park in September.”

The 24h Mosport Velo Grand Prix Cycle Relay and 360 Grand Prix Challenge encourages friendly competition and a fun atmosphere. This exclusive one-of-a-kind weekend cycling event is open to everyone. Mixed and single gender teams are both welcome.

The 24h Mosport Velo Event Ambassador is Olympic cyclist Curt Harnett, a three-time Olympic medalist (one silver and two bronze). Harnett is also an Ambassador for Special Olympics Ontario.

“I am pleased the date change will allow more cyclists an opportunity to experience a truly unique riding experience that helps make a positive difference in the lives of Special Olympics athletes,” said Harnett. “I can’t wait for the event to start.”

The Mosport track features 14.8% maximum gradient, 52-metre elevation gain, and 10 turns. Cyclists can expect an exceptional ride on the pristine pavement on a closed 4-kilometre Grand Prix circuit, which includes gently banked turns, dynamic elevation shifts, precision lap timing to track “personal best” performances, plus team rankings and a genuine pit-row exchange zone.
