Zephyr & Sandford news

by Pat Asling

Another week of up and down temperatures! I only know that from looking through my kitchen window, at my exterior thermometer over the last two weeks, as I have been suffering from shingles.

Certainly, a very uncomfortable illness which really puts you out. Of course, I find out many others, at one time or another, have been afflicted with various degrees of shingles, suffering for multiple lengths of time. Funny, as I do recall having chickenpox at the same time as my sister and brother, home from school and mostly enjoying ourselves. Unfortunately, it came at a week full of delicious Christmas eating. First, on Monday, the lunch out with my sorority sisters at a newish restaurant, then on Tuesday the Community Care lunch at Douglas Crossing, which I am assured was delicious. Wednesday was the potluck supper for the members and guests of Uxbridge Horticultural Group, always a dilemma with too many choices. This was followed by the goodies brought by members of the Uxbridge Genealogy Group, always delicious. Oh well, just think how many calories I didn’t consume!

Our sympathy and consolation goes out to the family and many Zephyr friends of Gary Sedore, who passed away at Oak Ridge Hospice in Port Perry. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and many friends of Charlotte Mills. Charlotte was well known in the area for the many years and activities she engaged in. She, and husband Jim, came to Uxbridge in the 1960s I would think, when Jim was engaged as the new minister at Trinity United Church. Sadly, Jim passed away not many years later, while still at Trinity. However, Charlotte and their children remained. She was very involved in church and the United Church Women's (UCW) activities and loved to sing, being in various choirs over the years. She will be missed!

The snow in our northern communities has been severe but Cor and Jenny VanMaurik managed to get to Meaford to visit their daughter. Dwight and Deborah Clements have also been to visit their daughter in Kitchener!

Congrats to Zephyr Scott Lions on another successful spaghetti supper. They are keeping busy. Best wishes to them, to the Zephyr Community Group and the Sandford Community Group for all they do. For those wondering, Yuk Yuks is coming to Sandford in March. Tickets will be available soon.

Only one birthday this week so a very happy birthday wish to friend Eve-Lynn Swan, a girl of many talents.

Remember the Festival of Lights is on at Elgin Park every night until January 4th. Don’t wait until the end, as I hear it is already crowded. They were also looking for teenage volunteers so maybe if you are looking for volunteer hours, or know of someone who is, you could contact them. Lights and balloons are also up on Campbell Drive again, quite the show, and once more the McKnight family up on the 6th concession is inviting you to take a drive up the star-studded lane and view their show around the barns. Take a drive up, you can’t mistake it from the road.

There are two Christmas dinners available for those who might be alone on Christmas Day. One at Egypt Hall, at 12:30 p.m., and the other at The Seniors building, in Uxbridge. Call St. Paul’s Anglican Church for more information, at 905-852-7016.

Church today was dedicated to those having a difficult time with family, illness, depression etc and featured music and a candle-lighting ceremony. Next week is the final Sunday of Lent and then the Christmas Eve service on December 24th, at 7 p.m. Please join with us!
