Looking back to last year it was interesting to see that October last year was much cooler than this one. We certainly have been gifted with great weather, and even the next couple of weeks look pretty good. On Saturday, I managed, with a little help, to get all my flowers off the deck, and the deck is now ready for Christmas decorating. Good thing, too, as we got more frost that evening. This October was also special in having the fourth and largest super moon of the year, with no clouds obscuring the view, as well as a comet. Slow to arrive and quick to go, the fall tree colours were wonderful, but the leaves were falling quickly. I just cut over the a couple of times and leave them be.

John Cavers takes so many beautiful photos but had the misfortune to fall while capturing the northern lights and injured both hands. Fortunately, he has mostly recovered in time to record several other special events around town. One of the firemen not mentioned during the special fire hall event was Bill Graham. Bill must be almost, if not the most long-serving fireman in the unit, but after more than 40 years is set to retire. Best wishes and a big thanks from all of us.
Last week, the Kinsmen held their Sports Wall of Fame at the Seniors building, where six individuals (three posthumously) and two teams were celebrated for their dedication to sports and other things as well in this community.
Birthday wishes went out to several people this past week, including Rob Croxall, who seems to be enjoying his retirement from the pharmacy by working harder at other jobs; birthday wishes to Cecil Blackburn, one of the sons of Harvey and Luella Blackburn whose farm was up the 6th. His sister Luanne, wife of Brian Evans, also celebrated a few days later. Coalton Leppard had his 20th birthday so not a teen household any longer. Big birthday greeting also to Hannah and Megan Risebrough who are an unbelievable 28 now. They are the older twin daughters of Mike and Susan Pegg Risebrough over on Davis Dr. Best wishes also to Miss Emily Shreeve, who is 15 and a rising sports star. She is the daughter of Pastor Gord (councillor for Ward 2) and his wife Karen Maharage Shreeve. Also, best wishes to Lisa Harrison of Sandford. Lisa love antique cars. Neil Arnold, a former Zephyr boy, also had a birthday. He spends a lot of time flying and joins his sister in sharing memories.
Congratulations to my niece Hayley Ashton on her 22 birthday. Hayley is a 4H ambassador for this region. This week, she accompanied her dad, Rob Ashton, Durham West 4H leader for many years, and five other members to the Royal competition, where they came in fourth. Huron 4H group was the winner. Birthday greetings also to Brenda Harwood Moore. Brenda and her husband Brian recently moved to Alberta to be closer to her son George and his family, and her sister Margaret Eng. Best wishes to our songstress Julien Kelland also celebrating a birthday. Continued success. Another big congratulations to the Tindall family and Tindal Farm Market who Durham Farm Connection awarded the Celebrate Agricultural Award. Fright Night at the Museum attracted over 260 children and adults, some from great distances.
Also Celebrating this past week were Jamie and Dr. Rachel Risebrough. Jamie, son of David and Judy, works on the Risebrough Farm with his uncle Mike while Rachel works out of the veterinary office in Uxbridge. Nice to have a vet on the farm. They have been married 12 years already and have three kids. Andrea and Kevin Arielle celebrated their 13th anniversary. They recently moved into Uxbridge with their daughter, from Sunderland. Special wishes go to Dan and Sarah Moore, who celebrated 10 years of marriage, having faced obstacles most young couples never think about.
Sunday, October 20th, was the anniversary of Sandford United Church, and we had a lovely celebration. Hopefully, you saw the photo of the cake cutting featuring Cathy Ellig and Bruce Smith. Bruce is now the only one of the congregation born in Sandford with parents and grandparents who supported the church. Cathy's family moved to Sandford when she was about 1. The rest of us are newbies, even if it is 60 years. From now on, we will be known as the Sandford Zephyr congregation, and today (the 27th), Zephyr held its 137 anniversary. Rev. Li Armstrong led the service, Ruth Baker contributed her wonderful music, Erin Blackstock performed two numbers, and Rev. William Fritz gave an appropriate and encouraging message that could be entitled "Soldier On." That church was also first set up at the cemetery; the original church is still part of the whole church. Today many of the young people, maybe not so young now, reflected on their memories of growing up in the church and the people who helped shape their lives. Unfortunately, like a lot of churches, the young people got married, got jobs, moved away from the community and didn't replace their parents. Hence, we come to the joining of two once vibrant congregations. Sunday, November 3rd we came together at Sandford for our first congregational meeting as one.
On Friday, November 1st, at the Leaskdale Historical Church there was another program of Jazz with Tom Baker and company providing the music. On the 22nd, there will be Chamber Music to listen to.
