Zephyr & Sandford news

by Pat Asling

With the staff on holiday last week, there is a lot to catch up on.

The hot, dry weather was great for our farming friends as they were able to get crops in without dashing between cloudbursts. Hay, done up in various forms, wheat, etc, all look like great abundance, which could be good or not, depending on your view. However, for other gardeners, rain is needed badly! Almost every day last week, it was forecast. Areas around got it, more than wanted in many cases, but nothing here, and vegetable and flower beds are very dry. I put off watering when the forecast calls for rain, but then it doesn’t happen, and nobody wants it to rain on a long holiday weekend, so wait and see!

There were many birthdays and other celebrations over the fortnight! Happy belated birthday to Donnalee Thompson Laing. Donnalee was raised in Ashworth, a road now getting more use than it ever had. After living for many years in B.C., she moved to Alberta to be close to her daughter. Happy birthday to Stephen Hackner, who grew up with his siblings and parents, Bruce and Ona. He now lives in Niagara with his wife and daughters and has his own construction business. Jim Corrigan was another who grew up in Uxbridge but later moved away. Just recently, he moved closer to Port Perry and enjoys his three grandchildren. Hope you enjoyed your day! Janet McTavish had always lived not too far from Uxbridge but moved to town when she married Floyd. Rick Bagshaw also has deep Uxbridge roots through his Beare Family grandparents. Best wishes for a great year to you both. An up-and-coming young lady who celebrated was Jessie Tindall, who is 19. She has foregone going back to school to stay home and help her parents run Tindalls Farm market, learning everything from baking to marketing, serving customers, etc.

Birthday wishes also to Earle Lockerby. He and I share the same dates and birthday year. Earle enjoyed a trip to PEI where he saw old friends and collected information for upcoming publications. I spent my birthday at lunch with my sister Faye and brother in law Keith Ashton as we all celebrate the same week. Happy birthday also to Deborah Clement. The Clements have spent a lot of the summer camping, with or without a canoe, or hosting their granddaughters and parents. Best wishes also to Dianne Bennett. Dianne lives in Zephyr and served as the church treasurer for many years. She also enjoyed singing with One Voice Choir for many years. Walter Campbell is perhaps best known for his beautiful paintings of gorgeous old houses etc. Many newcomers might know him for his music. He sings at Open Mike, at the Legion, and at Art in the Park on August 17th and 18th. Best wishes also to a lady who could qualify as the energizer bunny, our own Norma Scott. Norma always has her fridge full for anyone in need and still walks long distances. Happy birthday also to Sandi Bierema Ott (Annand), who celebrated recently. My son Ivan also celebrate a couple of days later. They are the same age and started school together in Scott Central. On August 1st, my brother Jerry and sister-in-law Joan Clarke celebrated their 60th anniversary at Hanover United Church with about 100 friends and relatives attending, about 20 relatives from here.

Best wishes to Trevor Cox and his fiancé, Jamie Elizabeth, on their impending marriage. How grandmother Evelyn would have loved to have been there!

There were sad events, too, like the death of Elwood Kirton’s mother, Violet, who lived over 105 years, Sharp as a whip! It was a fall which brought her down as too often happens. Our deepest sympathies to Elwood, his brother and all the family. Her service will be held at Hillside Church, Mount Albert, on Monday, August 12th, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, with the service conducted by Rev. Laura Kay at noon. On the other end of the age spectrum, we have the tragic death of Brian Postill, a young man killed in a work-related accident in a mudslide close to home. Brian was the son-in-law of Ted and Marion Meyers, married with children. Although it didn’t result in death, another young man suffered severe injuries when the tractor rolled on him. Ryan Fawnscomes from an extended family who have lived in Udora for several generations. His injuries are such that without treatment available, he may never walk again. He is married with two small kids. At least two fundraisers are available. One is a “Go Fund Me” started by Deanne Sweet and a live Auction organized by Dick Ott. Any help will be appreciated.

There are no church services at Sandfor/Zephyr this week, but we are invited to attend with Trinity. Don’t forget the horseshoe pitching at the museum every Tuesday night, at 6 p.m. Women and men are invited. On August 8th at the museum, there will be a Herb Fest. Learn about herbs grown in the garden and their uses. A special treat is promised!

This Friday night at the Foster, Justin Kerswill will perform. He uses multiple instruments and plays music from several countries and styles. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with a donation at the door. With the road being fixed, you may have to detour via the 6th and Ashworth Road.

The Uxbridge Horticultural Group meets again on Wednesday, August 14th, with Michael McTavish discussing “jumping worms”!

The Durham Region Ploughing match will be held on August 24th, starting at 9 a.m. on the former Bruce Harwood Farm. Speaking of which, our community is sorry to learn Brenda Harwood Moore and her husband Brian will be moving to Alberta shortly, where their son George and sister Margaret also live. Our best to them. We will certainly miss them and miss family who came to visit them. All the best!
