Here we are in September and another holiday coming up. For most young people school started this week, and I am sure it is both an exciting time and an anxious one, particularly for parents worried about their unvaccinated kids. At least there will be some schedule to follow, and a routine with in-person classes. I think there are many particulars still to be ironed out as to class safety. A little rain fell on the area but it was hit and miss, some places getting downpours while others got very little. Every drop counts and hopefully my water barrels got refilled. For cottagers, the weather has been terrific; for farmers it’s great for getting in crops already grown, but not so great for those still needing time to grow and mature.
We start off with a happy birthday message to James Kamstra. James is one of the best birders in our area and is programme director for North Durham Nature. Over the years James did research in various places, including Belize, where I first met him, long ago!
Congratulations to my dear friend and once neighbor on Medd Rd, Marie (Simpson) Wilson. Marie is 92, and is enjoying life at Shobrooke with her friends.
Happy birthday to Allan Hockly! The Hockleys lived south of Uxbridge for several years. He married Doris Evans, one of the triplets, and they live in Kitchener now. Happy birthday to Geralde Reesor-Grooter who organized our concert from Stouffville a year back. There were a number of anniversaries this week! Best wishes to Joel Van Veghel Myslik and Jamie Myslik on their 2nd anniversary. Congratulations to Don and Elaine Cordingley on their anniversary. Don had a serious bout of shingles some time ago but is back to work by his own ingenuity!
Karyn and Ryan Tindall celebrated their 19th anniversary, and 27 years of togetherness. They are running a couple of thriving businesses and doing well. Grant Evans and Lisha Van Neiuwenhove have celebrated 5 years of marriage. Even with all the work they do everyday I am sure they are itching to get back on stage once more.
Best wishes to Amy and Stan Smalley who celebrated their 33rd anniversary. Running a farm, raising such a talented group of children, and still looking good is a great accomplishment!
And finally, a big congratulations to Earle and Heidi Lockerby who celebrated their 57th anniversary on Sunday! Heidi has some medical problems but is coping well while Earle is always busy. He is Chairperson of our Sandford church council, on the board of the LMMS, as well as an author and co-author of a number of history books of the east coast.
Our sympathy goes out to the family of Brad Morrison, age 58, who passed away recently. Brad was born in Uxbridge to Margaret and the late Robert. He leaves his mother, his wife Kimberley, 3 children and 3 grandchildren. They have been living in Fort Erie.
Lori Wilson Robinson and her husband Steve were guests at their daughter Julia’s wedding to Michael Fors 2 weekends ago. It was a beautiful setting and a lovely wedding!
Deborah and Dwight Claments have had an interesting summer and they are pleased to announce that they their daughter Rachel has made them grandparents again. Rachel and Doraid live in Kitchener. The baby was 1 month early so was spending some time in the NICU unit, but is doing well. Deborah and Dwight spent a few days in Kitchener to help out. Earlier they had a great trip out West, visiting their son John in Vancouver, and son Chris and his family in Abbotsford for 9 days. Chris has started his job as a Prof. at Columbia College, and he is enjoying it. Right now he is setting up the courses he will teach.
They did quite a bit of camping this summer, recently at Achray Provincial Park in Algonquin Park—it is 45 km in on a dirt/gravel road—but is so worth the drive. They canoed some of the Barron Canyon, and saw where Tom Thomson painted “The Jackpine” painting. Sounds like a fabulous time! Oh, to be young again!
Our young horsewoman, Mack Moore is back at it again and this week attended and performed (or at least her horse performed) at two events this weekend, including at the Holstein Rodeo and again at Orangeville Rodeo. There’s a champion there!
The ‘Maud of Leaskdale’ play was on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday to good attendance (according to COVID protocols). Bethany McGillivray was very happy to be chosen to do Jennifer Carroll’s (Maud) hair for the performances.
Don’t forget the “Art on the Fringe” scheduled for the weekend of September 18th and 19th, held at the Uxbridge Scott Museum. There will be an amazing number and variety of artists included.
The Rotary is holding their 12th Scrap metal Day on September 11th, at the arena. Now is the time to clean out the garage!
