UXBRIDGE: The Township of Uxbridge is being careful not to provide too much input into the national issues between the United States and Canada.

At a meeting on Monday, February 10th, councillors saw correspondence from the Town of Halton Hills regarding a motion their council made regarding the “Sovereignty of Canada.” Since he was elected, President Donald Trump has been musing about Canada becoming the “51st state.”

“The council of the Town of Halton Hills categorically rejects any efforts by incoming President Trump or any others to undermine the sovereignty of Canada. We stand united with our Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and our Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for a Canada which remains strong, free, independent and characterized by peace, order and good government,” the motion stated.

However, in discussion on the issue, Mayor Dave Barton pointed out President Donald Trump “likes a fair bit of attention.”

“Sometimes less is more in these things. I just wonder if we should let our leaders, both federal and provincial, navigate this without noise from us, unless they’re asking for it,” he added.

Ward 4 Councillor Willie Popp noted the Township can make a difference just by chatting with other elected officials.

“I think it’s relevant we have to demonstrate our support and sometimes that can just be delegating upwards as we have meetings with our MP (Jennifer O’Connell) and MPP (Peter Bethlenfalvy).”

Councillors later voted to receive the correspondence for information.
