LORILEE YVETTE Special to The Standard
There was no crying in softball for the U13 Port Perry Angels, as they took home a bronze medal in the Pan-Jam Tournament, held in Ajax over the July 12-14th weekend. Perseverance, teamwork, and girl power were the themes and the Angels understood the assignment.
The girls played a solid six games in the extreme heat, defeating the Oshawa Lady B’s 14-12. Behind incredible pitching by Emma Rowland, and an extraordinary three-run walk-off homerun, by Scarlette McLellan-Swain, they advanced to the medal round.
In the championship game against Cobourg, Lacey Dybenko hit a triple with three runs batted in. Ava Venning and Ryan Askew came through with effective pitching, winning the bronze medal game with a final score of 12-8. Ava Nobile earned the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP). The medal is a welcomed halo for the girls to wear with pride!
The girls represented the Angels Association and Port Perry with honour, respect, good sportsmanship and comradery. It was an amazing team effort from all the girls over the weekend: Emily Cray, Charlotte and Maddy MacLachlan, Leah Beetham, Payslie Scott and Sophie Morgan. Missed over the weekend were Hannah and Farrah Bray.
A big thank you is extended to family, friends and especially the coaches (Darryl Swain, Andrew Scott, Chad Venning and Alexandria Swain) for their support over the weekend.
Please come out to our final home game, at Joe Fowler Park, on July 23rd at 6:30 p.m., to cheer on our local U13 team. Go Angels!
