The Ontario government Durham Region Caucus announces over $126 million for Durham Region Transit

DURHAM: Ontario is working to support municipalities and get people moving by investing in new transit infrastructure projects in Durham Region. Ontario’s Durham Region Caucus, including Members of Provincial Parliament Peter Bethlenfalvy, Lorne Coe, Lindsey Park, Rod Phillips and Laurie Scott who is also the provincial Minister of Infrastructure announced today that the federal government has approved 11 new transit infrastructure projects after nominating them under the Public Transit stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) over a year ago. “This is an exciting day for transit riders and residents in Durham Region. Our investment of nearly $38 million in 11 new public transit projects will provide residents with more access to public transit, connecting people to jobs safely and efficiently,” said Laurie Scott, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure. Amongst the 11 new transit projects coming to the region, residents and transit users can look forward to 11 new hybrid electric vehicles,13 conventional buses and 16 mini buses, a new Durham Region Transit operations building, and improved safety and accessibility at several bus stops in the region. “This is another example of the province working collaboratively with our federal and municipal partners to make important investments in infrastructure. With today’s announcement, these projects can move from shovel-ready to shovels moving” Minister Laurie Scott concluded. “Today is an exciting day for transit riders of Pickering-Uxbridge and residents across Durham Region. Our investment in these new public transit projects will provide community members with more access to connect and get around Durham Region efficiently. “I will continue to work closely with our municipal partners, families, and communities to support the much-needed infrastructure to provide improved safety, accessibility, and expanded connectivity throughout our region.” stated Peter Bethlenfalvy, MPP for Pickering- Uxbridge. “I have had a number of conversations with Durham Region Transit about the importance of these 11 projects over the last six months, I am pleased that we are announcing today that DRT can move forward with their plans for expanded transit options throughout the Region.” shared Lindsey Park, MPP for Durham.
