Tis the season! There are many opportunities to help support local interests. With the current mail strike, this is the perfect opportunity for you to show your local support! There are many Christmas markets happening this year. So when you buy local, you help support a friend, a family member or your neighbour.
Like me, we are often working and creating in a very small space. It's not a glamorous existence, when you're having to haul your wares to the next Christmas market. What happens behind the scenes is what usually takes the most time. What you’re not seeing is the hours dedicated to wrapping, labelling and organizing. What you’re not counting is the mileage on our car, having to deliver orders to customers. What you’re not seeing is the money spent to help get an idea off the ground.
Most small businesses are simply trying to break even. Yes, your business means they can make a profit but it also means they can afford Christmas gifts for their own children. One of the best quotes I’ve heard, “Don't support an artist after they are dead, support them while they are alive.”
So when faced with a choice at a big box store, I ask you to think twice. While you may be spending a little more locally, from a local artist, remember where that money goes. It goes to someone who may be struggling to pay their bills, or afford their kids dance lessons. You’re literally investing in where you live and helping support someone’s dream.
I’ve learned local support is the key to success! My Christmas ornaments have sold out the past two years because of that. That allows me to make a new design every year.
Tis the season for supporting local!
