The Artist Within: September 2024

by Lauren Walker

My friend, Gail Collins is an extremely talented wildlife artist. Painting animals is her go-to subject matter, and each piece is highly detailed. Let's learn more!

Artistic Experience

"Mom and Dad were both artists and taught me a lot, before I even left school. My mom used to teach art lessons at the kitchen table, and I would pay close attention," shared Gail.

When the decision came to go to school for Fine Arts, she chose to go to George Brown College, in the Graphic Sign Design and Production program. Shortly after starting her business as a sign painter, an opportunity at the Ontario Science Centre presented itself. She worked as a Graphic Technician and studio artist. Her long career ended, in 2023, as the manager of Exhibit Fabrication.

Materials and Mediums

While Gail loves using oils, "I just don't have the patience anymore. Acrylics are my go-to now, but I also work in colour pencils and pastels." She pointed out, while acrylics lack the richness and depth one would get with oils, she has learned to adapt. "Drying time sometimes can be too quick with acrylics but they are clean and quick. I also work with colour pencils and pastels, for a lot of my portrait work. I love the richness you can get with layering pencils," she explained. For her acrylic work she uses Golden Fluids. "They allow me to use layers effectively and do fine details." She uses Faber Castel colour pencils/pastels because they offer rich colour.

Artistic Advice

"It takes years to develop techniques and skills. Practice, practice, practice. I have spent most of my life learning from my successes and failed attempts, and still struggle some days, trying to get 'that thing' just right. Keep going!" Gail advised.
