In an effort to better understand where creativity comes from, I found myself furrowing my brow. Some scientists have researched where creativity comes from and why. The answer seems to be as varied as you and I. While some argue, “necessity is the mother of invention”, I would disagree and suggest it is far more than that. Artists are compelled to create!
When applying to shows or various publications, I am often asked to explain my creative process. What does this really mean? In simple terms, it means, how do I get from idea to finished product. My friends, this a head scratcher and here’s why. It’s like me trying to explain why the sun shines or the sky is blue. I know creativity exists but how or why is beyond my pay grade.
This is the only way I know how to explain it.
Creativity is like a rainstorm. When my ideas are dried up and barren, it could be a while until an idea flows. Much like a sudden rain storm, when the idea flows, it comes swiftly and pours out of my soul until its done. There’s just no stopping it.
We have creativity and it is defined differently from person to person. The joy of art is, we can define it however we wish and express ourselves through it. We can therefore create something unique and special. Whether you are a painter, sculptor, dancer, writer or anything in between, the choice is yours.
Happy painting!
