Sunderland Arena Set for Major Renovation and Expansion

BROCK: The long-anticipated transformation of the Sunderland Memorial Arena is finally moving forward, thanks to a collaborative agreement between the Township of Brock and the Sunderland Lions Club. The renovation and expansion project, guided by the Sunderland Arena Descope and Design Committee, promises a more modern, accessible, and community-focused facility.

After months of planning, the committee which includes municipal staff, a member of Council, and representatives from the Sunderland Lions Club, recently announced it has reached consensus on the final design.

“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to the residents and community organizations of Brock,” the Township and Lions Club said in a joint statement. “We are grateful to our community partners and the residents of Brock for their support and patience, throughout this planning process.”

The revitalized arena will feature a larger ice surface, expanded to 78 feet by 190 feet, requiring an addition to the north end of the building. Four brand new dressing rooms will be constructed, two of which will be fully accessible; and existing facilities will be updated, including the lobby, washrooms, and two dressing rooms which will now serve referees or be adapted as needed.

Regional Councillor, Mike Jubb praised the project, calling it a significant step forward for the entire township.

“This is more than just a renovation, it’s a reinvestment in our community,” said Mr. Jubb. “The arena has always been a gathering place in Sunderland, and this project ensures it will continue to serve future generations, in an even greater capacity. I’m proud of the teamwork [which] brought us to this point.”

“The Committee has worked hard to ensure the grant requirements are satisfied, while balancing innovation with practicality, to bring this vision to life,” the statement added. “Together, we’re building something truly special in Brock and we can’t wait to share it with you.”

The municipality emphasized, it remains committed to supporting community groups and residents who rely on the arena, throughout the renovation process, and will continue to share updates and timelines as the project progresses.
