SCUGOG: A severe storm in Scugog damaged trees and power lines, leaving a portion of the municipality without power for several hours on Wednesday, June 19th.

“At 9:23 p.m., Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain. This severe thunderstorm is located near Whitchurch-Stouffville, moving east at 50 km [per hour],” a notice from Environment Canada stated.

The notice stated the storm could create “90 km [per hour] wind gusts and torrential downpours.”

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” the notice stressed.

Most of the damage was centred around Prince Albert and areas around Port Perry’s Simcoe Street. Simcoe Street, from King Street to Vanedward Drive, was closed on Thursday, June 20th, while township and Hydro One staff worked on cleanup and repair efforts.

“The Township of Scugog experienced a severe storm last night, resulting in numerous downed trees and power lines throughout the community. As a result, some residents may experience power outages. We advise residents to create a home survival kit in case of power outages,” a Scugog Township press release stated.

The release also asked residents to make sure they are disposing of tree debris “through the proper channels.” For more information on yard waste collection, go online to www.durham.ca.
