SCUGOG: Local councillors recently received an update on the implementation of the Growing North Durham: Rural Economic Development Action Plan, during a presentation by Lori Talling, Acting Manager of Agriculture and Rural Economic Development for Durham Region, at a recent General Purpose and Administration Committee meeting.
The Growing North Durham Plan, endorsed by Regional Council and the Township of Scugog, in early 2023, aims to support economic growth in North Durham through to 2027. The latest annual report highlighted key developments and ongoing initiatives aimed at fostering business growth, community engagement, and economic sustainability in Scugog.
Ms. Talling’s presentation emphasized the collaborative efforts between: Durham Region’s Economic Development and Tourism staff; the Township of Scugog; and business support organizations, such as the North Durham Chamber of Commerce and the Port Perry Business Improvement Association. "Economic development is a shared effort, and by working together with local businesses, stakeholders, and municipal staff, we continue to make significant progress in supporting and attracting businesses in Scugog," she said.
The Growing North Durham Plan is structured under three pillars: People, Places, and Prosperity. One of the major accomplishments over the past year included hosting the North Durham Building Business Forum, in October 2024, featuring sessions on artificial intelligence for small businesses and workplace inclusion. In addition, a North Durham Labour Force Study was completed, to analyze workforce challenges and explore solutions, such as improving transportation options. Also an Agri-Food Gateway Pilot Program was launched, training small and medium-sized tech companies in agricultural technology.
Efforts to enhance local business and tourism included a partnership with Durham College’s photography program, to showcase north Durham businesses for marketing purposes. Several tourism and marketing campaigns were launched, for instance, Gather at the Farm and Rural Routes, highlighting Scugog’s vibrant business community. One-on-one support was provided, to more than 30 new or prospective businesses in 2024, assisting with funding opportunities, site selection, and business development.
To encourage business growth, the plan supported the development of the Scugog Business Program Final Report and Action Plan. There were 33 investment inquiries in 2024, with at least one North Durham site submitted for consideration, in 19 cases. Ongoing efforts to improve broadband connectivity for businesses continued, in collaboration with Durham OneNet and Vianet.
Mayor Wilma Wotten expressed her appreciation for the efforts made under the Growing North Durham Plan, emphasizing its importance in fostering a thriving local economy. “This plan is instrumental in ensuring Scugog remains a vibrant place to live and work,” She also said. “The progress we’ve made so far is a testament to the dedication of our economic development teams and community partners. We look forward to building on this momentum in the years ahead.”
Moving forward, the plan will focus on initiatives, such as: developing a North Durham Labour Force Action Plan, creating a standardized business visitation program, and implementing targeted business attraction strategies. “The work we’re doing today lays the foundation for continued economic success in Scugog and across North Durham,” Acting Manager LoriTalling concluded. “We remain committed to supporting our businesses and ensuring our community thrives.”
The next update on the Growing North Durham Plan is expected in early 2026, as economic development efforts continue to develop in response to community needs.
