SCUGOG: At the council meeting on Monday, January 6th, Amy Caughlin, Chief Executive Officer of the Scugog Memorial Public Library, delivered a detailed presentation on the Library Board's 2025 Operating Budget and key achievements.
Ms. Caughlin highlighted the success of the library’s Makerspace, which attracted 1,917 visits in its first year. The space hosted 15 classes and 20 STEM programs for teens and children. Popular tools included the laser cutter (295 uses), 3D printer (276 uses), and Cricut machine (172 uses).
“The Makerspace has been a game-changer for our community, providing access to cutting-edge technology and fostering creativity across all age groups,” Caughlin said.
Later, Ms. Caughlin outlined several strategic goals for 2025, including refreshing the library’s website, upgrading firewalls and network switches, installing security cameras, and completing a CEO succession plan. “These initiatives are essential for ensuring the library remains a safe, innovative, and inclusive space for everyone,” she noted.
The proposed 2025 Operating Budget includes a net increase of $41,900. Key cost drivers include: a $19,725 increase due to CUPE wage rate adjustments and statutory costs. As well, there is $20,000 to phase in the role of Makerspace Associate, with 50 percent offset by reserves in 2024. In addition, the Library has budgeted a $3,834 increase in supply costs and $6,989 rise in building maintenance costs due to a 15 percent hike in cleaning contract rates.
Offsetting these costs are increased revenues from investment interest and Snowflake Sale proceeds, totalling $10,588.
“Our budget reflects a careful balance between investing in innovation and maintaining fiscal responsibility,” Ms. Caughlin emphasized. She concluded her presentation by reaffirming the library’s commitment to organizational excellence and community engagement. “We’re excited to build on our successes and continue delivering exceptional services to Scugog residents in 2025.”
