SCUGOG: At a recent meeting of Scugog Township Council, Kristen Meyer-Creamer, Interim Executive Director of the North Durham/Scugog Chamber of Commerce, presented a proposal, to establish a permanent Tourism Office in Port Perry. The initiative would be a partnership between the Township of Scugog and the Chamber of Commerce, with a funding request of $23,000 from the Township, as part of ongoing 2025 municipal budget deliberations.
Ms. Meyer-Creamer emphasized the importance of the Tourism Office in supporting local businesses and enhancing Scugog’s position as a destination for visitors, during her presentation, at the Monday, January 6th meeting. “Port Perry has a vibrant tourism sector, and a permanent office would serve as a central hub to provide information, promote events, and attract even more visitors to our community,” she said.
Councillors engaged in a series of questions: regarding, the proposal; seeking additional details, about the financial implications; and the potential economic impact of the Tourism Office. Councillor Robert Rock noted the significance of tourism to the local economy, stating, “We need to carefully consider how this partnership could benefit not only the businesses in Port Perry but the entire township.”
The presentation concluded with councillors passing a motion, to refer the request to Township staff, for further review and recommendations.
Ms. Meyer-Creamer expressed optimism about the proposal moving forward. “This partnership represents an exciting opportunity to invest in Scugog’s future. We’re looking forward to working with the Township to make this vision a reality,” she said.
The funding request and proposal will be further discussed, as part of the 2025 budget process, with staff expected to provide additional insights in the coming weeks.
