UXBRIDGE: Energy minister Stephen Lecce and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy were in Sandford, on Friday, January 17th, to announce the completion of the Sandford Natural Gas Expansion Project.

The announcement was held at the Sandford Community Centre. The project was delivered by Enbridge Gas and was made possible by funding from Phase 2 of the Ontario government’s Natural Gas Expansion Program. The project sees 180 homes and businesses, in addition to the local community centre, supplied by Natural Gas.

Brian Johnson, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Enbridge Gas Ontario, noted, the company has been working to get Natural Gas to Sandford for “a number of years.”

“The Sandford project reflects our dedication to serving the community, providing customers with choice, and powering Ontario’s economy and growth,” he added, in a press release.

Minister Bethlenfalvy said, this project has been “a priority for government,” and characterized it as, “making life more affordable for people in Ontario.”

Minister Lecce said, this announcement is “a reminder to the families of Sandford and right across this riding, we can work together to reduce fees.” He also said, because of this option, seniors won’t need to make “a choice between eating and heating.”

According to the Ontario government, residents “could save up to 50 per cent in energy costs a year” with the option of Natural Gas.

Uxbridge Mayor Dave Barton explained the importance of this project to the community.

“We have nuclear, we have hydro, we have solar, and we have natural gas, and we need all of those solutions. When we had the tornado which whipped through Uxbridge, most of our electricity grid was down. My natural gas generator was operating when I got home,” he said. “I believe every house in Uxbridge and every farm in Uxbridge needs two sources of energy connected all the time.”
