Ross Memorial Hospital Team Member Gives Birth to First Baby of 2025

Ryan Young, RMH Communications and Public Affairs Officer

KAWARTHA LAKES: “This completes our family,” says Lydia Schmid and Steve Burbine of Lindsay.

Lydia, who works in Environmental Support Services at Ross Memorial Hospital (RMH), gave birth to Sophie at 10:20 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025, the first delivery of the year at the hospital. Sophie was born weighing six pounds, 12 ounces.

“Sophie came very quick,” explains Lydia. “We were scheduled for Monday, but I woke up at three in the morning having contractions. It wasn’t our intention to have the New Year’s baby – we jumped the gun.” Adding, “My first child was a week early, too.”

Older sister Maggie, 3, has already been to visit her baby sister.

“I’m excited,” added Steve, who initially met Lydia when they worked together years ago. “You’re nervous for this moment, but once you realize today is the day it’s just like ‘let’s go.’ And noticing the similarities and differences between her and Maggie at not even 24 hours old, it’s really fun.”

Both mom and Sophie are happy and healthy and anticipate being discharged from hospital sometime today.

“We’re going to take it one day at a time,” says Lydia on the new addition to their household. “She has hardly cried at all - we’ll see how long that lasts.”
