BRIAN BATES, Port Perry Angels
SCUGOG: The Port Perry Angels [Under 15 Tier One] U15Tl team competed in its first-ever USA softball showcase tournament this past weekend, in Columbus, Ohio. This team surpassed all expectations, in going undefeated, with a record of 6 wins and 1 tie, while scoring 67 runs for and only allowing 27 against. As a result of their win-loss record, Port Perry finished in the top 3 of 40 teams participating.
The overall record was accomplished by strong pitching, from Kaley Doerfler, Kaitlyn Hancock, and Marissa Grainger and excellent infield play, by Ava Marshall, LainaTavernier, Julia Stewart, Rylie Shanley, and Jordynne McClurg. In addition, the outfield was outstanding, making game-saving catches from each of the fielders, Chelsey Pongo, Darby Oakes, Joclynn Jeffery, and Erin Correa.
On the offensive side, both Kaley Doerfler and Kaitlyn Hancock hit two towering, over-the-fence, home runs EACH, with single home runs from Jordynne McClurg and Rylie Shanley.
In closing, CONGRATS to all players and the coaching staff, Ty Azzolin, Brian Bates, James Hancock, and Candy Doerfler for making Port Perry, Canada, proud, both on and off the field, in the girls' first-ever USA Showcase Tournament. Way to go, Angels!
