LORILEE YVETTE, Special to The Standard
SCUGOG: Last weekend, the Central East Women’s Fastpitch League held their annual playoff tournament in Whitby. With six teams in the Under 15 (U15) Tier ll division, the Port Perry Angels RED team faced all five teams over the weekend. Saturday, they defeated the Cobourg Angels 6-3 and lost to Port Perry BLACK 8-7. Sunday, they took on the Whitby Eagles and Kawartha Lakers, winning both games to send them into the finals against the Oshawa Lady B’s.
The gold medal game was high energy with lots of cheering. The Angels took the lead right off the bat with a two-run homerun by Brie. The Lady B’s answered back, scoring one run in the bottom of the first.
Sam led off the second inning with a single and scored on a hit by Jaelyn. Oshawa answered back again with one run in the bottom of the second. Madison started off the third inning with a single, followed by Natasha, Dakota, and Erica, all with hits scoring three runs to stretch the lead to four, but the Lady B’s answered right back with two runs to make it 6-4 at the end of the third inning. Ella C scored on a hit by Addison in the fourth inning to extend Angel’s lead by three, and Ella P and Jada each scored in the fifth inning, giving the Angels their biggest lead of 9-4. With great pitching and tight defence on both sides, the score remained 9-4 into the seventh inning, with the Port Perry Angels winning the gold medal!
This winning weekend was a great team effort by all, with some big catches in the outfield by Ella P, Mackenzie, and Jaelyn; infield snags by Natasha, Jada, Sam, and Erica; fantastic pitching by Madison, Brie, and Addison; and behind the plate with Dakota, Lauren, Ella C., and Brie.
Special thanks to coaches Wendy, Pippa, Erin, and Alyssa for all the time and energy they dedicated to the team this season. Congratulations to the CEWFL CHAMPS for the third year in a row. Port Perry Angels RED!
