LORILEE MCKELVIE Special to The Standard
SCUGOG: The Port Perry Angels Mite team competed in the PanJam tournament this past weekend. Taking on the heat and 7 tough teams, our girls played fantastic and came out with a 2-2 record, placing 5th overall. There was lots of excitement on and off the diamonds. Here’s a breakdown of all the action: The mite’s first game was Friday afternoon against the Brampton Blazers Gold team. With excellent pitching from both teams and tight defence, the Angels came up short losing 2-1. Highlights from this game include a great snag from Reeghan at 2nd, Brie hitting 2 singles, and a fantastic play when the coaches sent Jaelyn on an attempt to steal 2nd, allowing Brie to score from 3rd. Saturday morning the Mites faced the Oakville Angels. Up against another fast pitching team, our girls struggled to make contact at the plate scoring only 1 run in the fourth inning from Addison’s hit. Losing this game 13-1, put the Port Perry Angels into the consolation round. After a team picnic in the park, the girls were given some relief from the heat by running through the splash pad at Country Lane Park. After cooling off, the girls were ready to take on the Cobourg Jr. Angels. The girls’ bats came alive in this game with Natasha, Sam, Addison, and Brie all hitting singles and Brie with a double as well! This team effort led to a victory of 11-4 for Port Perry. After finishing round robin play with a record of 1-2, the Mites took on the Corunna Lady Giants Sunday morning battling it out for 5th place. Again, the bats were on fire. Singles from Brie, Jaelyn, Reeghan, Addison, a triple from Madison, and a homerun from Natasha contributed to a 10-4 victory. Special mention goes to our pitchers Brie, Madison, and Sam for their great efforts this weekend and to our catchers Dakota, Lauren, Ella, and Brie for taking on the heat with all that gear on. Congratulations to our game MVP’s: Brie, Jaelyn, Natasha, Reeghan, and Madison. Thank-you to Jeremy Arnott and the towns of Ajax and Whitby for hosting this tournament. The mite’s next home game is Wednesday, July 31st at 6:30 p.m. at Carolyn Best.
