Pine Ridge Garden Club

SHIRLEY LOVE, Special to The Standard

Mother’s Day was founded by Anna Jarvis, in Philadelphia, on May 12th, 1907, whose mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health.

Within five years, every state was observing the day, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. Anna promoted the wearing of a white carnation, as a tribute to one’s mother. What had been primarily a day of honour became associated with the sending of cards and the giving of gifts.

The middle of May is a great time to be planting your garden, and it should be easy for you to honour your mother with plants, hanging baskets etc., with the promise of planting them for her.

Communities in Bloom is requesting citizens across Canada to join in their “Hope for Growing 2021,” by planting your gardens with yellow flowers. Yellow is the international colour of hope.

Everyone can participate by sharing photos on Facebook and Instagram, and tagging @CibCef using the hashtag #hopeisgrowing. Please call Shirley, at 905-986-5330, or for more information on this very friendly club go to their website, at pineridgegardenclub.com.
