DURHAM/KAWARTHA LAKES: A date for the provincial election has officially been set. Ontarians will be going to the polls on Thursday, February 27th.

The date was announced, in the afternoon on Tuesday, January 28th, following Premier Doug Ford’s visit with the Lieutenant Governor. The writs for the election were issued on Wednesday, January 29th.

Premier Ford had previously announced, on January 24th, an election call was coming because he felt he needs “a mandate from the people to fight against Donald Trump’s tariffs.”

At a press conference, on Tuesday, January 28th, Premier Ford was asked, what would happen if the election doesn’t give him the mandate he hopes for.

“That’s going to be up to the people. They’re going to have a choice. Do they want a leader that’s going to protect jobs [and] protect people’s livelihoods, businesses [and] communities? That’s what people are going to have to decide, and that’s why we’ll be going to the people.”

He was also asked, if he can say without a doubt that this election is not opportunistic for him.

“What I’ll tell the people of Ontario [is,] we are going to see an unprecedented attack to our families, to our businesses [and] to our communities. Something we’ve never seen in the history of the country; getting economically attacked by the largest country in the world, the most powerful person in the world when it comes to President Trump. We’re going to be there for them, we’re going to support the people [and] we’re going to protect the people.”

This guarantees, Ontario will see two elections this year, with the federal election required to be called, on or before October 20th.
