DURHAM/KAWARTHA LAKES: The Ontario government is launching new energy related programs to help residents.
The new programs were announced by energy and electrification minister Stephen Lecce at a press conference on Tuesday, January 7th.
The programs include what is being called the ‘Home Renovation Savings Program.’
“The new Home Renovation Savings Program will launch on January 28th, 2025, and offer rebates of up to 30 percent for home energy efficiency renovations and improvements, including new windows, doors, insulation, air sealing, smart thermostats, and heat pumps, as well as rooftop solar panels and battery storage systems for people who want to generate and store energy at home. Later in 2025, the program will expand to include rebates for energy efficient appliances, including refrigerators and freezers,” explained an Ontario government press release.
The changes also include an expansion of the ‘Peak Perks’ program in the province.
“Participants in Peak Perks save with their smart thermostats by participating in brief, time-limited thermostat adjustments during periods of peak electricity demand that can occur on the hottest summer days,” the program’s website explained.
The government’s press release stated the expansion will include “a new program specifically targeted to small businesses, including convenience stores and restaurants. Businesses will receive a financial incentive of $75 upon initial enrollment in the program and $20 per year for each eligible smart thermostat connected to a central air conditioning system or heat pump unit.”
At the press conference, Minister Lecce said the government has been working on “proactive, bold solutions” while making sure energy “remains affordable.”
He also called this announcement “the largest investment in energy efficiency in Ontario and Canadian history.” The total investment is $10.9 billion.
“[It’s] a major new initiative which empowers parents and seniors and small business owners and community leaders. [It] gives them new ways to save money and reduce demand on the provincial grid,” Minister Lecce added.
In a statement Todd McCarthy, the Member of Provincial Parliament for Durham, praised the release of these programs.
“These new Energy Efficiency Programs which all Durham residents have access to will lower energy bills, put more megawatts into Ontario’s energy grid, and ultimately put more money back into your pockets,” he said. “While the previous Liberal government skyrocketed energy prices, our government is taking a different approach which puts affordability at the forefront.”
