DURHAM/KAWARTHA LAKES: An early provincial election call could be determined by what happens in the United States.

At two separate press conferences this past week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has been asked about the potential for a provincial election this year.

“Let’s see where the tariffs go,” Premier Ford said at a press conference, on Monday, January 13th. “I believe, if you’re going to go out there, we’re going to be hit the hardest, bar none, than any jurisdiction in the country. They’re targeting Ontario, they’re targeting good paying jobs in Ontario. I’m going to fight, with every tool I have in our toolbox, to protect Ontario jobs.”

Premier Ford then expanded on why he would call an election in this case.

“I think, if it comes to it, and we have to spend tens of billions of dollars, we go to the people. Let the people decide. It’s their money, it’s not the government’s.”

At a separate press conference, on Tuesday, January 14th, Premier Ford was asked if an early election would create a leadership vacuum, given the federal government is currently prorogued.

“Not at all. I’ll still be Premier if that happens, and we haven’t decided if that’s going to happen first of all.”

He added, he’d still be taking calls and talking with Canadian and American politicians and diplomats if an election was underway, as well.
