ZEPHYR: A volleyball area is coming to the park in Zephyr, thanks to the efforts of the Zephyr Community Association.

According to the chair of the Zephyr Community Association, Sean Schevers, a few pieces of volleyball equipment have already been donated. He said they just need a net and a few posts.

The association will be using financial donations from past events to buy the rest of the needed equipment.

“I like to do a lot of stuff for the community,” explained Mr. Schevers, describing his involvement within the Zephyr community. “That’s the whole reason I joined the [Zephyr Community Association] in the first place.” He likes to know what is happening within his community and how changes are being made.

The idea of a volleyball area came to Mr. Schevers because he’d noticed there wasn’t much for his own kids to do at the park. And he has noticed an interest in volleyball among older kids.

The association may put up a basketball area and a pickleball/tennis court area sometime in the future. However, that has yet to be discussed with council.

Mr. Schevers hopes the volleyball area will be set up later this year. However, it may have to wait until next year.

A proposed skating rink has also been discussed with council. The rink will be established at the baseball diamond in Zephyr, to be built this coming winter, if weather conditions are favourable.Building the skating rink with be the responsibility of the Zephyr Scott Lions Club.

Shaun Schevers has been with the Zephyr Community Association for about eight years and has been the chair of the association for about three years.

As the chair of the Zephyr Community Association, Mr. Schevers’ responsibilities include communicating with respective Uxbridge Township staff and council members.

“I want to do a lot of stuff for our community and make the community better,” he said.

For example, on Tuesday, Aug. 13th, Mr. Schevers attended council requesting permission to build a volleyball area at Zephyr Park and a skating rink in the winter.

“We all work pretty good together,” said Mr. Schevers. “We work to see what our community needs, [and] what would be best for our community.”

He also oversees the events the Zephyr Community Association organizes for the community. It is his responsibility to make sure these events run smoothly.
