New Sports Hall of Fame Exhibit at the Scugog Arena

SHAWN LACKIE, Special to The Standard

SCUGOG: The Scugog Sports Hall of Fame invites the public to view the newest exhibit, at the Scugog Arena in the Pad 2 area, assembled with various items from the Hall collection and some items on loan from groups and individuals.

The exhibit represents a multitude of winter sports, enjoyed by Scugog residents, both past and present. Of special note are jackets, jerseys and sweaters worn by Scugog athletes who have already been inducted into the Scugog Sports Hall of Fame. Perhaps one of the most exciting items on display is the signed Team Canada hockey jersey worn by Port Perry Minor Hockey alumni Ty Dellandrea. He wore it at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic, where Team Canada won the Gold Medal.

The display also includes some remarkable examples of the equipment worn and used in the past. Visitors will be able to look at historical photos of athletes and teams and perhaps even find some relatives and friends among them.

Throughout the past few months, work has continued by committee members, to examine and assess the Sports Hall of Fame artifacts and memorabilia collections. The collection contains over 500 items significant to the history of the sport in Scugog. It is important these items, some large and some small, are displayed and shared with the community, to remind us all of our connection to the history and traditions of sports in Scugog. That is a rich and varied history.

These have been challenging times, and as a result of the Covid 19 restrictions, the Scugog Sports Hall of Fame Induction event, planned for November 2020, was cancelled. The Scugog Sports Hall of Fame committee has decided to postpone the 2021 induction ceremony and is cautiously planning the next induction ceremony for April 2022.

As always, nominations for individual athletes, teams, and builders can be submitted to Scugog Township or any member of the Scugog Sports Hall of Fame. You can get forms from the Township of Scugog website, at https://www.scugog.ca/en/live-and-play/Scugog-Sports-Hall-of-Fame.aspx or from any Township office, including the arena.
