KAWARTHA LAKES: Families in the City of Kawartha Lakes can expect a more localized approach to school bus cancellations this winter as the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) recently implemented a new zoned system starting Tuesday, January 7th.
The change comes after December’s severe weather disruptions highlighted the need for a more tailored approach to transportation cancellations across the region. Previously, cancellations were applied broadly, sometimes affecting areas unaffected by weather issues.
“This new zoned approach allows us to better address the unique weather patterns across the district,” said TLDSB Director of Education Wesley Hahn. “By dividing our board into five zones, and Kawartha Lakes into Zones 4 and 5, we can ensure decisions about bus cancellations are more accurate and responsive to local conditions.”
Under the new system, if transportation is cancelled in one or more zones, buses will not operate in the affected areas. However, schools will remain open, and parents/guardians will need to arrange transportation if they feel it is safe for their children to attend.
The City of Kawartha Lakes is divided into two zones for bus cancellations: Zone 4, which includes Bobcaygeon Public School, Fenelon Falls Secondary School, Lady Mackenzie Public School, and others. Zone 5 covers schools in Lindsay and surrounding areas, including I.E. Weldon Secondary School, Leslie Frost Public School, and Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute.

The response from parents has been mixed. Some welcome the change, citing the need for improved accuracy in cancellations.
“As a parent, I appreciate the Board is recognizing the differences in weather across the region,” said Lindsay resident Sarah Stone. “It’s frustrating when buses are cancelled for the entire area when only part of it is affected.”
However, others have expressed concerns about the added responsibility for parents on inclement weather days.
“It’s going to be challenging for families who rely on buses,” said Bobcaygeon parent Mark Taylor. “Not everyone has the flexibility to drive their kids to school on short notice.”
TLDSB has outlined multiple ways for parents to stay updated on bus cancellations, including their website, social media platforms, and local radio stations.
Director Hahn emphasized the importance of safety in making these decisions: “We know these changes will require adjustments, but the safety of our students remains our top priority.”
As the new system rolls out, families in Kawartha Lakes are encouraged to monitor updates closely and plan accordingly for winter weather challenges.
