Movement for Life: November 7, 2024

by Lauren Walker

Let’s remember the overall idea of wellness is a chain which connects our mental, physical and emotional well being. Here are a few things I do to stay well inside and out.

Exercise

Physical activity is an absolute must! There’s nothing which helps me feel more in control then being in the weight room. Whenever I’m stressed out or having heightened anxiety, moving my body helps alleviate it. How much you do is really dependent on your current fitness level. An absolute beginner would benefit by going out for a walk. Exercise releases dopamine which I refer to as “happy hormones”.

Eating Well

You are what you eat! Processed sugar is a big no no, in general, so I try to stay away from it. A quality diet makes all the difference in my energy levels and mental clarity. Eating a balanced combination of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats keeps my energy levels high. Every one is different, so what works for me may not work for you.

Sleeping Well

There’s nothing like a solid eight hours of sleep.

Stress Less

Easier said than done. While stress is a part of life, I believe we can find ways to manage it. I try to engage in activities which feed my soul. Meditative or reflective exercises are also beneficial. Some of you may know I’m an artist and a writer. These activities make me happy from the inside out because it allows me to express my thoughts and emotions in a healthy way.

Get Outside

Being in nature can have medicinal effects. Being out in the sunshine and enjoying fresh air is a great way to reconnect with ones place in the scheme of things. Others find prayer very beneficial as well. It also calms my mind and body and allows me to focus in the present.
