Movement for Life: happy new year

by Lauren Walker

This marks my official first article of 2025. A new year always means resolutions. I have to admit that I am not a fan of a resolution. Why? Let’s dive in to what it really means to make true change.

Lifetime Resolution

People tend to have a misconception of what true change means. Unfortunately, you cannot undo years of bad habits in a few months. The time it takes to get out of shape is the time it’ll get in to shape. Let me be blunt, you have to drop the concept of a New Years resolution and remember it is a lifetime resolution.

Where to begin?

Wading through the years of bad habits can be overwhelming. Let’s start with something simple. Before making any changes to your eating habits, I encourage my clients to document what they eat on a regular basis. Being aware of what goes in to your body and how it effects you is the first step. Keep track of when you eat, what you eat and how you feel after. I encourage you to learn the concept of caloric intake by doing research. As my mom always taught me, “If you can’t pronounce the ingredients, don’t eat it.” Food is fuel and it takes time to learn what fuels you.

Make A Move

When you start making changes and improve your eating habits, you’ll feel more energetic. As an absolute beginner, you must practice in small doses. If you’ve never been active then starting with 20 minutes a day is a reasonable start. Go for a walk at lunch time, or take the stairs. Gradually increase your time as your fitness level improve.
