SCUGOG: The Port Perry MoJacks earned a split in two highly competitive contests over the weekend. The MoJacks opened their weekend action on Saturday, December 7th in Apsley against the Orr Division’s top team, the North Kawartha Knights. Just over eight minutes into the first period, after Noah Bray took a slashing penalty, the Knights capitalized on the power play, putting Port Perry down 1 to 0. But, five and a half minutes into the second period, Justin Jacobs tied the game with a goal. With over eight minutes remaining in the period, Bray took advantage of a Port Perry power play, scoring to make it a 2 to 1 MoJacks game. Two Carter Thornton power play goals in the span of about three minutes in the third period increased the MoJacks’ lead to 4 to 1. The Knights would get two goals late in the period, but Port Perry held on to best the Knights 4 to 3. MoJacks captain Spencer Robinson finished the game with four assists. The MoJacks were tested again when they faced the second best team in the division, the Lakefield Chiefs, at Scugog Arena on Sunday, December 8th. The game did not start off well for Port Perry, as the Chiefs took a 2 to 0 lead into the first intermission. However, a little over three minutes into the second period, Robinson was able to control a puck he found between his feet and scored, cutting the deficit to 2 to 1. Then, with less than eight minutes left on the clock and the MoJacks on a five on three power play, Bray received a nice pass at the right side of the Lakefield net from Josh Lemmon and scored, tying the game 2 to 2. A minute and a half later, the Chiefs took the lead back 3 to 2. But goals in the final minute of the frame from Kolby Fralic and Robinson gave the MoJacks a 4 to 3 lead heading into the third period. But the lead didn’t last. Over six minutes in, the Chiefs took advantage of a turnover from the MoJacks defence in front of the net, scoring to make it a 4 to 4 game. With two minutes remaining, the Chiefs were able to put the puck past goaltender Corey Kuypers again, and Lakefield had a 5 to 4 lead. The MoJacks pulled the goalie for the extra attacker late in the period, but were unable to get the equalizer, falling 5 to 4. After the game, MoJacks head coach Tom Boyle gave his evaluation of the contest. “It pretty much sums up our year to be honest. I thought the boys competed hard, I thought we played well enough to get the two points. A couple bad bounces, a couple bad breaks, a couple brain farts, and that’s the difference in the hockey game, between winning and losing,” he said. “Coming off the win last night in North Kawartha, so it’s a short turnaround for us. Two tough games back to back, but I thought our boys competed hard for the full 60 minutes today.”
One Timers: -The MoJacks will look to shutdown the Merchants in Little Britain on Saturday, December 14th at 7:30 p.m. -The MoJacks will hold their annual ‘Wooley Toss’ to support Operation Scugog at their next home game at Scugog Arena on Sunday, December 15th at 2:20 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring winter clothing in plastic bags, for the local charity, to be thrown on the ice when the MoJacks score their first goal of the game. The MoJacks will face the Gananoque Islanders.
