Lumberjacks get iced out against Georgina

DAN CEARNS The Standard

The Port Perry Lumberjacks were frozen by the Georgina Ice in both of their recent games against them.

On Friday, November 29th, the Lumberjacks visited the Georgina Ice Palace for the first half of this home-and-home series.

Five and a half minutes in, the Ice would strike first, getting a power play goal to make it 1-0. However, less than six minutes later, Andrew Naccarato-Soule tied the game 1-1 with a goal.

About 12 and a half minutes into the second period, the Ice would restore the one-goal lead by scoring on a penalty shot. Then, over 15 minutes in, Georgina would put the puck in the net again to extend Port Perry’s deficit to 3-1.

Just 24 seconds into the third period, the Ice would capitalize on a power play, making it a 4-1 game. Over nine minutes into the frame, Cooper Hodgins scored, cutting the deficit in half. But a Georgina power-play goal later in the period ended the Lumberjacks’ hopes, and they lost 5-2.

The Lumberjacks looked for some redemption when they hosted the Ice at Scugog Arena on Sunday, December 1st. Despite a frenetic pace and coming close a few times to scoring, the game remained without a goal through the first 20 minutes of play.

This time, the Lumberjacks struck first. Over nine minutes into the second period, Naccarato-Soule scored a power-play goal. But, two goals later in the period from the Georgina Ice put Port Perry behind 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Just under six minutes into the third period, the Ice scored again to make it a 3-1 game. With less than four and a half minutes left in the period, Charlie Paton scored a shorthanded goal, cutting the deficit back to a single goal. But, the Ice would secure the game with an empty net goal late in the period, and the Lumberjacks lost 4-2.

One Timers:

- There is only one game on the schedule this week for the Lumberjacks. They host the Clarington Eagles at Scugog Arena on Sunday, December 8th at 2:25 p.m.

- Fans are encouraged to bring mittens, scarves, and toques they wish to donate to Operation Scugog to Scugog Arena on Sunday, December 15th, for the Lumberjacks’ annual Wooley Toss game. Those items will be thrown onto the ice when the Lumberjacks score their first goal in a game against the Little Britain Merchants. The game will begin at 2:25 p.m.
