The Port Perry Lumberjacks lost both of their recent weekend games, including an overtime thriller and a blowout.
On Saturday, February 8th, the Lumberjacks headed to Little Britain to face off with the Merchants.
There were no goals scored through the first half of the game. Over 10 minutes in, the Merchants would put the puck past goaltender Vann Kulba to make it 1-0. Over 14 minutes in, Jacob Sharpe capitalized on a Lumberjack power play to tie the game 1-1.
Three minutes into the second period, the Merchants regained the lead with a goal. A little over three minutes later, the Merchants scored again, increasing the deficit to 3-1. Less than eight and a half minutes in, a Cameron Marshall shot found the back of the net. Marshall would score again, over 10 and a half minutes into the period, tying the game 3-3. With over two minutes remaining on the clock, Zak Krolicki gave the Lumberjacks their first lead of the game with a goal.
Seven minutes into the third period, the Merchants struck on the power play, tying the game 4-4. Andrew Naccarato-Soule put the puck in the net, eight and a half minutes in, giving the Lumberjacks a 5-4 lead. However, just over 12 minutes in, the Merchants capitalized on another power play opportunity to tie the game 5-5. Captain Jack Staniland would score two and a half minutes later, but the Merchants tied the game up again late in the period.
The game headed to overtime. Just 25 seconds into that frame, the Merchants would score the game winning goal, sending the Lumberjacks home with a 7-6 loss.
The Lumberjacks did not fare better in their game against one of the division’s top teams, the Georgina Ice, at Scugog Arena on Sunday, February 9th.
Solid goaltending from Daniel Giusti kept the Lumberjacks in the game for most of the first period, with him stopping the first 11 shots he faced and making several spectacular stops. The Ice scored, with less than seven minutes remaining, giving the Lumberjacks a 1-0 deficit. Just over a minute later, the Ice would find the back of the net again, making it a 2-0 game.
The floodgates were open in the second period, with the Ice scoring four times. The Lumberjacks trailed 6-0 after 40 minutes of play.
With less than six minutes remaining in the third period, Nate Stapleton scored a power play goal. However, that would end up being the Lumberjacks’ only goal of the game. The Ice would score later in the period, and the Lumberjacks lost 7-1.
