KAWARTHA LAKES: A petition advocating for a four-way stop at the intersection of Mary Street West and Adelaide Street South was received by council on Tuesday, January 28th, and has been referred to staff for further review.
The petition, spearheaded by local residents Charlene and Phillip Bruce, calls for changing the current two-way stop to a four-way stop, citing safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The intersection serves as a key access point to the Lindsay Recreation Centre and Fleming College’s campus.
“We’ve seen far too many close calls at this intersection,” said Ms. Bruce. “With the amount of traffic coming through here, especially students and families, it’s only a matter of time before something serious happens.”
According to the petition, there have been 15 car accidents at the intersection in the past five years. Seventy-two residents supported the change, emphasizing the need for proactive measures before another collision occurs.
“It’s a simple fix which could save lives,” Mr. Bruce added. “Adding two more stop signs could make a big difference in slowing down traffic and making it safer for everyone.”
Council has referred the petition to staff for review, with a report expected to be presented by June 30th, 2025. In the meantime, residents like the Bruces hope their efforts will lead to action from the city.
“This isn’t just about statistics; it’s about protecting our community,” said Charlene. “We need to make sure everyone, from students to seniors, can cross safely.”
