Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame ceremony honours local legends and community builders

KAWARTHA LAKES: The Victoria Park Armoury, in Lindsay, was filled with celebration and pride, on Sunday, October 20th, as the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame welcomed its newest inductees. This year’s ceremony saw a larger class of honourees than usual, with individuals and teams which have made significant contributions to the local sports community, being recognized.

Among the individual inductees were: Bruce Faulkner, Peter Sanderson, and Mark Sadgrove, all recognized for their exceptional dedication and achievements in their respective sports. Joining them were two team inductees: the 1974 Bobcaygeon Midget Cougars hockey team and the Little Britain Merchants Junior C Hockey organization.

The Little Britain Merchants have been a cornerstone of local hockey for nearly five decades. Kevin Field, who was recognized alongside his father, Art Field, for their work with the team, noted the significance of their continued involvement: "We’re proud to say, we’ve been the longest continually family-run franchise in the province, now, in our 46th season after joining the Junior 'C' ranks in 1978."

The Kelly Doyle Long Term Community Volunteer Service Award was presented to Garth Davidson, a figure whose influence stretches beyond just hockey. Mr. Davidson founded the mixed slo-pitch league, in Lindsay, and played a pivotal role in expanding mixed volleyball, throughout the area. His work has had a lasting impact on recreational sports, enriching the lives of countless community members.

This year’s nominations featured an unusually high number of applications, as highlighted by Nominations Chair, Pat O’Reilly, in his remarks. “When the committee looked over all of the applications, we couldn’t eliminate anyone,” he explained. “We usually have a good number but we were inundated with extra nominations this year. So, as a result, we had five instead of four. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t, but it was great to have it this year.”

In addition to the inductees, the ceremony recognized three outstanding high school graduates with student bursaries. Savannah Payne, Amy Lamb, and Gabi Groff were honoured for their academic and extracurricular achievements. Mr. O’Reilly praised their work ethic, stating, “The work these students have done, coming out of high school, says a lot about their character, builds their character, and certainly helps them going into university as well.”

This year’s ceremony was a powerful reminder of the strong sports culture in the community and the individuals and teams who have made it thrive. As the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame grows, so does the legacy of excellence it honours.
