KAWARTHA LAKES: The City is moving forward with plans to fill the vacant Ward 5 Council seat through a by-election, as outlined during the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, January 14th. City Clerk Cathie Ritchie provided an update on the process, including key dates and details, following the vacancy declaration on November 19th, 2024.

“Council made the decision to proceed with a by-election to ensure residents of Ward 5 have direct input in selecting their representative,” said Ms. Ritchie. “This process will be conducted in full compliance with the Municipal Elections Act, with transparency and accessibility at the forefront.”

To authorize the by-election, a by-law was passed during a Special Council meeting held prior to the Committee of the Whole meeting on January 14th. The nomination period for candidates officially opened on Wednesday, January 15th. Voting will take place from April 1st to April 10th, with polls closing at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 10th. The successful candidate will take the Oath of Office on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, officially joining Council.

The by-election will utilize internet voting as the primary method, a move intended to make the process more accessible and efficient for voters. “Internet voting has proven to be a reliable and convenient option in past elections,” Ms. Ritchie explained. “It allows voters to participate from the comfort of their own homes, ensuring greater accessibility for all eligible residents, including those with mobility challenges.”

The City Clerk’s office will oversee the by-election, with costs covered by the municipality’s Election Reserve. The decision to use internet voting reflects the City’s commitment to modernizing electoral processes while maintaining security and integrity.

Mayor Doug Elmslie emphasized the importance of the by-election in maintaining a full and effective Council. “Ward 5 residents deserve strong representation, and this by-election will ensure their voices are heard at the table. I encourage anyone who is passionate about their community to consider running for office or taking part in the voting process,” he said.

The Ward 5 seat became vacant following the resignation of the previous councillor. The by-election will provide an opportunity for residents to elect a new representative who will serve their interests and contribute to shaping the future of the City of Kawartha Lakes.

For more information on the nomination process or the voting period, residents can contact the City Clerk’s office or visit the City's website.
