KAWARTHA LAKES: The Kawartha Lakes Public Library system is kicking off the new year with a variety of engaging programs designed to bring the community together. From family-friendly activities to tech tutorials, the library branches have something for everyone.
One of the most anticipated offerings is the Movies at the Library series held on Fridays at the Lindsay branch, where residents can enjoy free screenings of popular films. “It’s a great way to unwind and connect with neighbours,” said Outreach and Community Engagement Specialist Jacqueline Chartier. “We try to pick movies that appeal to a wide audience, and the feedback has been fantastic.”
For those looking to sharpen their digital skills, one-on-one tech help sessions are available at all library branches. These personalized tutorials cover everything from navigating smartphones to setting up email accounts. “Our goal is to make technology less intimidating,” added Ms. Chartier. “We’re here to help people feel confident in the digital age.”
Craft enthusiasts will want to mark their calendars for Wednesday, Jan. 15, when the Fenelon Falls branch hosts a scrapbooking workshop. Participants can bring their own photos and mementos to create personalized keepsakes. “Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to preserve memories and tell your story,” explained Karen Mitchell, a local resident who has attended similar workshops in the past and is looking forward to resuming this program in 2025.
Meanwhile, the Lindsay branch continues to draw crowds to its Board Game Café every Wednesday. Families and friends can gather to play classic and modern board games in a relaxed, welcoming environment. “It’s a hit with all age groups,” said Ms. Chartier. “There’s something special about playing games together in person.”
Other regular programs include book clubs for readers of all interests, Storytime for Babies to foster early literacy, and LEGO Mania sessions where kids can unleash their creativity. “We love seeing the excitement on kids’ faces when they build something amazing,” said Bathany’s Emily Harper.
Special events are also on the horizon, including PA Day Programs scheduled for Friday, Jan. 31. These events are designed to keep kids entertained and engaged while schools are closed.
“Our libraries are more than just places to borrow books,” said Ms. Chartier. “They’re community hubs where people can learn, create, and connect. We’re thrilled to offer such a diverse lineup of programs to start the year.”
Residents are encouraged to visit the Kawartha Lakes Public Library website or their local branch for more information and registration details. With so many activities to choose from, there’s never been a better time to explore what the library has to offer.
