KAWARTHA LAKES: Kawartha Farmfest is welcoming a new location for this year’s event, Shannon O’Donnell’s farm, on Kirkfield Road.

Kawartha Farmfest is a self guided driving tour of local farms and rural attractions, in the City of Kawartha Lakes. This year the event will be held on Saturday, October 12th.

“This is our first year participating in Farmfest. We're very excited to be a participating farm. We have wanted to do it for a few years but the timing has never been right,” Mrs. O’Donnell said. “We love having people visit our farm and opportunities, to get families engaged in local agriculture. Learning about food production is really important to us. This fall, we are opening the doors to our new farm store, The Roost Market, located on the farm. We decided to take advantage of Farmfest weekend, to celebrate our grand opening of the store. It's a great opportunity to showcase what we're doing here and introduce the community to a fantastic place to purchase local food.”

She also explained how important it is for the local farm to use this event to showcase agricultural practices.

“Engaging people in farming and food production has always been very important to us, as we've built our farm business, over the years. It is so critical people learn and understand how their food comes to be on their plates.”

Mrs. O’Donnell noted, she has a few ideas of what she hopes people take from this experience.

“I hope people will learn more about what we do and offer here. Our farm offers learning opportunities throughout the year, particularly during maple syrup season. I also hope families get to enjoy a beautiful day out together, doing something meaningful, exploring their communities and gaining an appreciation for the work farmers do to put food on their plates.”

Last year, Farmfest saw close to 750 attendees take part. Lindsay and Bobcaygeon’s Kawartha Dairy locations are offering ticket holders a "Buy one cone, Get one cone free" coupon, for the day of Farmfest.
