UXBRIDGE: Uxbridge resident Jaclyn Stelmaszyk, along with teammate Kate Haber, from Owen Sound, came in first place, and earned a gold medal for Canada, in the Women’s lightweight doubles for rowing at the Pan American games on Friday, August 9th. This dynamic team edged out the win by approximately one second over the team from Chili, who placed second, and the team from Cuba, who placed third. Jacklyn said, “while we weren’t in first place right away, we knew our fitness and technical strength would set us apart for the second half of the race.”
Jaclyn’s teammate, Kate Haber, previously won a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American games, held in Toronto, in the same event. Jaclyn explains, “(Kate and I) have only been training together in a double since April, however, we trained together from September to October 2014, in a double winning at the head of the Charles in Boston.”
The 2019 Pan Am Games, officially known as the XVIII Pan Am Games, is a multi-sport event, held in Lima, Peru from July 26th – August 11th. Approximately 6700 athletes representing 41 countries from North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, competed in 424 events. 477 athletes representing Canada earned 35 gold medals, 64 silver, and 53 bronze.
Reflecting upon her win, Jacklyn states, “finishing off this rowing season with Pan Am gold has been an unforgettable experience for me. I’m very proud to represent Canada, and very grateful for the people who are behind me and support me, especially my husband and my family.”
