KAWARTHA LAKES: Voters in Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes are gearing up for the upcoming Canadian federal election, set to take place on Monday, April 28th. This election brings notable changes to the riding's boundaries, with the Township of Brock now part of the new York-Durham riding, while Trent Hills and North Kawartha Township have been added to Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes.
Conservative incumbent Jamie Schmale, who has represented the riding since 2015, is seeking re-election. He will be challenged by Aylea Teel of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Nell Thomas, running for the Liberal Party, Michael Penman of the People's Party of Canada (PPC), and Green Party candidate Valerie Powell.
The nomination period for candidates officially closed on Monday, April 7th. With the slate of candidates now finalized, residents will have several opportunities to cast their ballots ahead of election day. Advance voting is scheduled to take place from Friday, April 18th, to Monday, April 21st, allowing voters to participate early if they are unable to vote on April 28th.
As the campaign period progresses, candidates will be making their case to voters on key issues impacting the region. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in the democratic process as Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes heads to the polls.
