KAWARTHA LAKES: Representatives from the Fenelon Falls and District Chamber of Commerce urged the City of Kawartha Lakes to prioritize transportation infrastructure in the community, during a Committee of the Whole meeting, on Tuesday, January 14th.

Christopher Handley and Marylee Boston appeared before Council, to advocate for a second in-town bridge crossing within Fenelon Falls, citing growing concerns, over transportation needs and the limitations, of having only one existing bridge.

“Fenelon Falls is a vibrant and growing community,” Mr. Handley said. “But as we expand, our infrastructure needs to keep pace. A second crossing would not only alleviate traffic congestion but also ensure a reliable connection in emergencies.”

Ms. Boston echoed Handley’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of planning for future growth. “The community has been very clear about their concerns,” she said. “We believe, now is the time to act, starting with research and scoping for a second crossing.”

The deputation included a request, for Council to incorporate funding into the city’s budget, for further studies on an in-town by-pass route. The proposal builds on a study conducted in 2022, with Handley and Boston calling on the city to define next steps and move the project forward.

Councillor Mike Perry, who moved the motion to receive the deputation, acknowledged the significance of the issue. “This is an important matter for Fenelon Falls,” Councillor Perry said. “Council recognizes the need to explore solutions [which] will benefit the community long-term.”

The motion, seconded by Councillor Warren, ensures the matter will be brought to the next Regular Council Meeting for further consideration.

The recommendation was met with support from attendees, reflecting the community’s desire to address transportation challenges. Mr. Handley concluded, “This isn’t just about solving today’s problems, it’s about building a stronger, more connected future for Fenelon Falls.”
