On Sunday, March 23rd, the Right Honourable, Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, announced the 45th Federal election, after requesting the Governor General, Mary Simon, dissolve parliament.
Mr. Carney assumed his role as Liberal leader and Prime Minister after his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, announced his resignation, in January. He was sworn in, as the 33rd Prime Minister of Canada, on Monday, March 14th.
Candidate nominations close on Monday, April 7th, at 2 p.m. A complete list of candidates in their ridings will be viewable on or after Wednesday, April 9th, at elections.ca or at thestandardnewspaper.ca.
Currently, the five major party leaders are: The Right Honourable Mark Carney, leader of the Liberal Party; The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada; Yves-Francois Blancet, Leader of the Bloc Quebecois; Jagmeet Singh, Leader of the New Democratic Party; and Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party. One of these five will likely be our next Prime Minister.
Key issues in this election will be the housing crisis, and the economy, including inflation and tariffs. Other issues to be discussed will be the environment, health care, and indigenous rights and reconciliation.
The last Federal Election, held in 2021, was during COVID-19, and therefore, voting was by mail-in ballots. This year's election will be held on Monday, April 28th, and voters will cast their ballots in person, at their respective polling stations.
For those who are unable to attend a polling station on election day, you can cast your vote in person early, at an advance poll location, on April 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd. You can also vote by mail, through an official mail-in ballot which voters must apply for, by Tuesday, April 22nd. You then must send in your ballot by mail, or deliver it in-person to your local Elections Canada office, before the polls close on election day. For more information on how you can vote, check elections.ca.
