BROCK: At the Brock Township council meeting, on Monday, January 13th, Wayne Ward, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Facilities, presented a detailed report outlining the challenges and feasibility of providing early ice for the 2025-26 season. The request, submitted by Brock Minor Hockey Association and Sunderland Ringette, has sparked ongoing discussions, due to competing facility demands and logistical constraints.

Early ice has traditionally been accommodated at the Sunderland Memorial Arena, but the facility is slated for renovations, leaving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre as the only potential alternative. However, longstanding events, including the Beaverton Fall Fair and the Beaverton Lions Club Elimination Draw, present significant scheduling conflicts. Both groups emphasized the importance of maintaining their traditional event dates, citing historical significance and community fundraising needs.

“The Beaverton Fall Fair has been held on the same weekend for 169 years, and 2025 marks its 170th anniversary. This timing aligns with other fairs in the region which is crucial for the midway and 4H cow show,” the Beaverton Agricultural Society shared in their response.

Mr. Ward’s report also highlighted technical and financial hurdles, associated with early ice installation, including the strain on refrigeration systems, during warmer September weather, and the impact on staffing resources. “The installation of early ice, in warmer conditions, increases energy consumption and places additional stress on the equipment,” Director Ward noted.

Council deferred the decision, passing a motion moved by Councillor Claire Doble and seconded by Councillor Peter Frank. The motion called for further discussions with user groups, to explore alternatives, before the February 10th council meeting.

“Collaboration is key to finding a solution [which] meets the needs of all stakeholders,” said Mr. Ward. “We’re committed to balancing the requirements of ice users and longstanding community events.”

The resolution underscores the township’s effort to accommodate all parties, while acknowledging the logistical and financial challenges posed by early ice installation. A decision is expected, following consultations with user groups, in the coming weeks.
