Durham RIDE program stops more vehicles, sees more charges

DURHAM REGION: The 2024 Durham Regional Police Service Festive RIDE program saw an increase of vehicles stopped and in charges laid.

RIDE is a sobriety check program the police run annually. The final results were released on Thursday, January 2nd. The program ran for six weeks and police stopped a total of 16,227 vehicles. In 2023, police stopped 12,682 vehicles during the program.

Of the people stopped, 1,145 of them were given roadside breath tests. This is up from 2023, where 533 people were given roadside tests. 102 people were given a three day suspension after their test, up from 40 the year prior.

However, novice driver license suspensions decreased from 19 in 2023 to 16 in 2024. 105 people were charged with impaired driving offences, up from 87 in 2023. There were 47 charges laid for other criminal code offences and 1,214 highway traffic act offences charges laid.

Drug offences saw a large increase, going from three in 2023 to 17 in 2024. There were also 15 provincial cannabis act charges laid.
