UXBRIDGE: On June 24th, Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria, joined Durham Region MPPs Peter Bethlenfalvy (Pickering-Uxbridge), Lorne Coe (Whitby), and Rod Phillips (Ajax) for a roundtable with local business and community leaders to discuss economic development and red tape reduction. Members heard about opportunities to remove barriers to business growth and promote economic development, as well as feedback on potential government projects in Durham Region. “Our government has helped create over 190,000 jobs since being elected,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction. “We will continue to create an environment where our job creators can grow, thrive and create good jobs. We want to hear from businesses in Durham to ensure they have the tools and resources necessary to grow their business and create high paying jobs for the next generation.” Over the past year, Ontario’s Government for the People has been working hard to support economic growth and put the province back on a path to sustainable fiscal health. The province is implementing a red tape reduction strategy to reduce over 380,000 burdensome regulations, helping Ontario businesses grow and attract new investment to the province. Strategic infrastructure investments made by the province are supporting economic development and helping commuters in Durham Region and across Ontario. “Today’s discussion with business and community leaders reinforces the government’s commitment to work across industries to create jobs for workers and attract investment to Durham Region,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge. “Restoring trust and accountability to the province’s finances, addressing the deficit, cutting red tape and protecting core services are top priorities for the provincial government, and for the people and businesses of Durham Region.” To grow the provincial economy, Ontario’s Government for the People has developed the Open for Business Action Plan. The Plan helps businesses create, grow, and keep new jobs by setting targets for reducing burdensome red tape by 25 percent and removing over $400 million of unnecessary annual costs to businesses by 2020. “Local leaders have gathered together today to discuss how we can create an environment where Durham businesses can thrive and help drive the growth of our region’s economy for years to come,” said Rod Phillips, MPP for Ajax. “Our government is continuing to move forward with our plan to create good jobs, support small business, put more money in people’s pockets and restore trust and accountability in government, while also protecting what matters most through sound investments in health care and education.” Ontario’s Government for the People has already passed the Making Ontario Open for Business Act and the Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act to reduce red tape and provide relief across key sectors of the economy. “Building on an already well-established entrepreneurial spirit and culture, Durham is leveraging success and creating opportunity,” said Whitby MPP Lorne Coe. “Durham Region is geographically, culturally and economically diverse, and we are continuing to transform and evolve. Without a doubt economic advantage and opportunity to live in the Region of Durham.” Today’s roundtable is part of an ongoing conversation with job creators across Ontario. These meetings are an opportunity for the provincial government to hear directly from business owners and community leaders about the impact of burdensome red tape and how the government can make Ontario more competitive and establish an environment for businesses to create, grow, and keep jobs.
