KAWARTHA LAKES: Councillors were recently briefed on the municipality’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP) during a recent presentation by Kassel Prince, Senior Transportation – Traffic Engineer with consultant EGIS Group.
The TMP, a cornerstone document, outlines a long-term vision for creating an inclusive, sustainable, and multi-modal transportation network that will serve the community through to 2051 and beyond.
“The TMP is not just a roadmap; it’s a vision for the future,” said Mr. Prince. “It ensures our transportation system evolves to meet the needs of our growing population while enhancing mobility and accessibility for all residents and visitors.”
The TMP emphasizes the importance of a connected and barrier-free transportation network. Key objectives include improving network capacity, promoting active transportation such as cycling and walking, enhancing transit options, and implementing transportation demand management strategies. The preferred approach, identified as Alternative Option 4, focuses on a Multi-modal Network Strategy. This strategy balances traditional infrastructure improvements with sustainable modes of transportation through targeted policies and investments.
“By adopting a multi-modal approach, we’re ensuring that our transportation network is not only functional but also environmentally and socially sustainable,” Mr. Prince explained. “This strategy reflects the diverse needs of our community and prioritizes inclusivity.”
Councillor Dan Joyce raised questions about the inclusion of roundabouts in the plan, reflecting public interest in innovative traffic solutions. Mr. Prince acknowledged the inquiry, noting roundabouts are being considered as part of the network capacity improvements. “Roundabouts can offer safety and efficiency benefits, and their potential implementation will be evaluated within the broader context of the TMP,” he said.
The TMP also addresses the municipality’s rapid growth and the need for infrastructure that supports economic development while preserving the area’s natural beauty.
The final report will be presented to Council for endorsement by March 31st, 2025. Until then, public consultations and stakeholder engagements will continue to refine the plan and ensure it aligns with the community’s needs and aspirations.
“We are committed to creating a transportation network that serves everyone,” Mr. Prince concluded. “This is a plan for the people, shaped by their input and designed for their future.”
