BROCK: A potential sidewalk extension which would connect the town of Cannington to Brock High School was discussed at a recent council meeting, with staff citing significant cost concerns.
Durham Student Transportation Services has requested a sidewalk extension, approximately 350 metres east of Side Road 18A, leading to Brock High School. The proposed sidewalk would span a total length of 1.63 kilometers and require approximately 2,445 square meters of cement to complete.
James Peitos, Capital Project Coordinator, presented a report to council, outlining the financial implications of the project. “The preliminary cost estimate, for the sidewalk installation alone, is approximately $403,425,” Mr. Peitos stated. “That does not include additional costs, related to design, engineering, or potential infrastructure adjustments, such as hydro poles, ditches, and tree removal.”
While council acknowledged the importance of pedestrian safety, the current budget does not allocate funds for such an extensive project. “At this time, the projected cost of this project exceeds the approved budget for sidewalk installations, in 2025,” Mr. Peitos explained. “Staff recommend the project not move forward at this time.”
Despite these concerns, Council opted not to dismiss the idea entirely. A resolution, moved by Councillor Claire Doble and seconded by Councillor Lynn Campbell, was passed, to direct staff to further investigate potential costs, including engineering and construction expenses, as well as possible opportunities for cost-sharing.
“We recognize the need for safer pedestrian routes, especially for students,” said Councillor Doble. “Before making any final decisions, we need a clearer picture of all costs and funding possibilities.”
The motion ensures staff will return to Council with a more detailed financial breakdown, including options for funding partnerships, before any final decision is made.
Residents and stakeholders will have to wait, until further reports are brought forward, to determine whether the sidewalk extension could be included in future municipal budgets, possibly in 2026 or later.
