KAWARTHA LAKES: In a recent move, to strengthen local arts and culture, the City of Kawartha Lakes has approved a formal partnership agreement with the Kawartha Art Gallery (KAG). The decision, made during a council meeting, on Tuesday, February 18th, secures funding and operational support for the gallery through to 2026.
The agreement follows an updated business case, submitted by KAG, on April 9th, 2024, proposing relocation to a downtown Lindsay location and an expansion of community programming. As part of this proposal, KAG requested $200,000 in annual funding, from 2024 to 2026. Council had already approved this funding, through the 2024 and 2025 budgets, leading to the recommendation, a formal agreement be established to clarify expectations, including reporting requirements and deliverables.
“This partnership ensures KAG continues to thrive and serve as a vital part of our community’s cultural landscape,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “With this agreement in place, we can ensure transparency, accountability, and continued growth for the gallery.”
Founded in 1976, as a not-for-profit charity, KAG has been a cornerstone of local arts programming for nearly 50 years. Historically supported by municipal funding and space, within the Lindsay Library Branch, the gallery has sought to expand its operations, to better serve the growing needs of the community.
The approved agreement establishes a three-year term, ending December 31st, 2026, aligning with current funding commitments. It will be revisited each council term, ensuring continued support for arts and culture within Kawartha Lakes. Any future funding, beyond 2026, will be considered before the agreement expires.
CAO Ron Taylor’s report on the partnership was passed as printed, reinforcing the city's commitment to supporting the arts, as part of its strategic priority of Good Government and fostering a Vibrant and Growing Economy.
“KAG’s expansion will not only benefit local artists and residents but also contribute to tourism and economic development in Kawartha Lakes,” said, Kawartha Art Gallery executive director, Susan Taylor. “We appreciate the city’s ongoing support and look forward to continuing to enrich the cultural fabric of our community.”
The agreement ensures continued financial and operational support for KAG, while setting clear expectations for accountability. Council members expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the importance of investment in arts and culture, for the well-being of residents and the local economy.
With this formalized partnership, Kawartha Art Gallery is set to embark on a new chapter, bringing expanded programming and a renewed commitment to artistic excellence in the heart of Kawartha Lakes.
