KAWARTHA LAKES: The city is celebrating the acclamation of Ward 7 Councillor Charlie McDonald as Deputy Mayor for 2025.

Mr. McDonald, who served in the role throughout 2024, was recognized for his leadership and dedication during a Council meeting on Tuesday, December 10th.

Reflecting on his tenure, Deputy Mayor McDonald expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and pride in the year’s accomplishments. “As my term as Deputy Mayor comes to an end, I’m grateful and proud of what we’ve achieved together,” he said. “It’s been an honour to serve, and I appreciate the efforts of our teamwork over the past year.”

Mr. McDonald’s 2024 term was marked by several key achievements, starting with the development of a robust licensing and enforcement system for short-term rentals. As chair of the task force, alongside Councillors Richardson, Joyce, and Perry, Mr. McDonald spearheaded the initiative, which has since become a provincial model. The system has improved safety and compliance, benefiting both residents and visitors.

In addition, Mr. McDonald led efforts to enhance customer service across municipal departments. By fostering collaboration and addressing performance challenges, he helped lay a foundation for ongoing improvements in the areas most requested by residents.

Another highlight of the year was the successful hosting of the International Plowing Match, which drew 50,000 visitors to Kawartha Lakes and showcased the community’s vibrant spirit and unity. Mr. McDonald also played a pivotal role in shaping the 2025 municipal budget, guiding the Budget Committee to craft a financial plan that balances current needs with long-term sustainability.

During his address, Mr. McDonald emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving these milestones. “The Deputy Mayor may chair the task force meetings and be the front-runner, but it’s the team that makes things work,” he said. “Kawartha Lakes is fortunate to have a group of people who care so deeply about our community and its residents.”

Looking ahead, Mr. McDonald expressed enthusiasm for continuing his work in the coming year. “I am honoured to serve as Deputy Mayor and look forward to working with Council, staff and community members to continue advancing our shared goals,” he said. “Together, we can make 2025 a year of continued success and growth for Kawartha Lakes.”

Mayor Doug Elmslie and CAO Ron Taylor were among those who congratulated Mr. McDonald on his acclamation, highlighting his dedication and vision for the municipality.
