Brock Accessibility Advisory Committee presents ambitious plans for 2025

BROCK: A recent presentation by the Brock Accessibility Advisory Committee (BAAC) highlighted the committee's ongoing commitment to improve accessibility across the township and outlined its vision for 2025.

On Monday, December 2nd, Donna Schirle, Chair of the BAAC, presented a detailed update on the committee’s accomplishments, challenges, and forward-looking plans during the Brock Township Council meeting.

Ms. Schirle began by emphasizing the successes of 2024, notably the approval of the BAAC’s 2024-2026 Workplan in March. Among the committee’s key accomplishments was the development of an Accessible Events Checklist, the completion of the annual review of the Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, and the presentation of the 2024 Accessibility Award to The Thrift Hub for their dedication to inclusivity. Additionally, the committee hosted the 2024 Tri-AAC Meeting, bringing together members from Scugog and Uxbridge Accessibility Advisory Committees, and provided critical input on local projects, including the Beaverton Commons Site Plan and the King Street Park design.

“These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our committee members and our commitment to ensuring accessibility is a priority in Brock,” Ms. Schirle stated.

However, Ms. Schirle also addressed the challenges BAAC faces, particularly with membership retention and public engagement. “Keeping members engaged and encouraging residents to participate in our initiatives remains an uphill battle,” she said, calling for greater community involvement.

Looking ahead, the committee outlined its ambitious plans for 2025. Among its key priorities are conducting municipal facility audits to identify and address accessibility gaps, researching the intersectionality of mental health and accessibility, and investigating the potential of programs such as StopGap.ca, which aims to improve physical accessibility through temporary ramp solutions.

BAAC also requested Council’s support for specific items in the upcoming 2025 budget deliberations, including the establishment of a dedicated annual budget and funding for professional accessibility audits. "We believe professional audits will provide critical insights to guide future improvements," Ms. Schirle explained, referencing a motion passed in September, to prioritize such funding.

To facilitate this work, BAAC proposed forming a sub-committee to oversee facility audits and expressed interest in reviewing the ‘Accessibility Makes Good Business Sense’ resource to engage local businesses in accessibility improvements.

In closing, Ms. Schirle emphasized the committee’s focus on public education and engagement in 2025. “We want to bring accessibility conversations into the community, making sure residents and businesses alike understand the importance of inclusivity,” she said.

Council members praised the committee’s efforts, with several expressing support for the proposed initiatives. The next year promises to be a pivotal one for BAAC as they strive to build a more accessible Brock Township for all.
